The author of this article claims that, yes, first-graders do possess a sense of audience awareness when writer for familiar readers. Julie E. Wollman-Bonilla observed this claim through a research where these children would partake in Family Message Journal writing with their family. Each day the child would write a letter to their family and, some time throughout the day, expect a reply back from them. The fact that they personally knew who they were writing two (their family) and the anticipation of a reply showed in their messages as audience awareness through uses of rhetorical moves.
